A FAMILY NARROWLY escaped serious injury after a manhole exploded when they were walking past.

The incident occurred in Birmingham yesterday.

West Midlands Fire said that the incident was attended by Hay Mills Fire Station. They were called to the scene at around 12.21pm, where they discovered that two manhole covers had become dislodged.

A one-metre-deep hole was left in the footpath.

“Fortunately – and amazingly – the family passing by weren’t hurt,” said Hay Mills.

They said that utility companies are investigating who owns the manhole, and the cause of the explosion.
