IRELAND’S NICOLAS ROCHE put in an impressive performance at the end of stage 10 of the 2017 Vuelta a Espana to move up to joint-second overall.
With the peloton content to keep off the pace for most of the day, the stage was won by Quick-Step Floors’ Matteo Trentin — his second of this year’s Vuelta — who beat Jose Joaquin Rojas of Moviestar to the finish line after the pair negotiated the treacherous descent from the final climb up Collado Bermejo.
While Trentin’s win helps him take the green jersey from Chris Froome, the Team Sky rider still holds onto the race leader’s red jersey.
However, Roche’s late attack has moved him alongside Colombia’s Estaban Chaves in joint-second place, 36 seconds behind Froome.
“It was a good day,” Roche told Eurosport after the stage.
“It wasn’t really a plan to go on the descent until I saw [Nibali] open up a small gap. But I was there with him and said, ‘let’s go and see what happens.’”
