WATER SHORTAGE

Water restrictions causes outrage in the greater Dublin area

The water shortage was scheduled to end at 7am this morning, but will be back in place this evening.

Updated 8.50am

WATER RESTRICTIONS IN Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow areas were imposed from 8pm last night and were scheduled to come to an end at 7am this morning.

The water restrictions were put in place due to the ongoing serious production problem at Ballymore Eustace Water Treatment Plant.

Restrictions will remain in place until at least next Monday, with Dublin City Council stating they will be reviewing it on a daily basis.

The water restrictions have caused outrage with many businesses and householders in the greater Dublin area.

This morning

Waking up this morning, many people have taken to Twitter to vent their frustrations, with some stating that their water has not been turned back on.

Micheal Philips from Dublin City Council said today on RTE’s Morning Ireland that there may be some people who still have no water as it might take some time for water to reach the water mains, though he did say he was surprised that people were still experiencing water shortages as he said the tank in peoples homes should hold a sufficient amount of water for people to use this morning.

About 1.3 million people who are connected to the network are expected to be affected to some extent.

Criticisms

Others were critical of the situation, and stated how it has affected them:

Yesterday, the Irish Restaurant Associtation called on the council to bring in water tankers for businesses affected and asked that the restrictions be put back to 9.30pm.

Dublin councillors yesterday criticised the water shortage stating that the failure in the water system shows why it is not the right time to be priortising water metering, while another councillor said the water restrictions in Dublin “may endanger public safety” as Dublin Fire Brigade gears up to deal with one of its busiest nights of the year tonight.

Halloween

The Irish Fire and Emergency Services Association state that the restrictions could not have come at a worse time.

Dublin City Council, on behalf of the four Dublin Local Authorities, is urging consumers all over the Dublin region to conserve water.

They stated that the restrictions will assist the authorities in replenishing treated drinking water levels to a normal level.
