Another 5 goals for Limerick as they crush Waterford

The Blues are averaging nearly four goals per game.

Waterford United 1
Limerick 5

LIMERICK MADE IT fifteen wins from sixteen SSE Airtricity League First Division matches as they made light work of Waterford United on Friday evening in a 5-1 trouncing at the RSC.

In the end the scoreline may be a little harsh on the home side — with Limerick leading 2-1 heading into the final ten minutes — but three goals before the final whistle sealed their comprehensive win.

Limerick deservedly took the lead after 14 minutes as Sean Russell swung in the cross from the left for striker Chris Mulhall to head home.

But the home side levelled four minutes before the break. Cory Galvin’s cross was cleared to the feet of debutant Robert Bayly and he fired over Limerick keeper Freddy Hall into the top corner from 25 yards.

After an even opening to the second period, league leaders Limerick regained the lead. Sean McSweeney played in Greene who rounded Blues centre back David O’Leary and the advancing keeper Sheehan to fire into the top corner from five yards.

The home side came close with a deflected free kick from midfielder Sean Byrne that dropped narrowly wide of Hall’s far post, before Limerick impressively ended the contest.

Stephen Kenny whipped in the cross for Greene to fire home his second goal to make it 3-1 with ten minutes to go. Kenny himself got in on the scoresheet before Ross Mann linked up with Garbhan Coughlan to make it 5-1 and maintain Limerick’s nineteen-point lead at the top of the table.
