Should this Kildare goal against Westmeath in Croke Park yesterday have been allowed?

Manager Cian O’Neill was not happy that Cathal McNally’s goal was disallowed.

WESTMEATH BOOKED A place in a Leinster final for a second successive year yesterday but did Kildare have reason to feel aggrieved after losing out in Croke Park?

Kildare were narrowly defeated by 1-12 to 1-11 but manager Cian O’Neill was not happy with the decision to disallow this late goal from substitute Cathal McNally.

“(We) had a perfectly legitimate goal (disallowed) from my perspective unless the camera was telling me lies, (on) the big screen,” remarked O’Neill, when speaking to RTÉ Sunday Game last night.

It’s those decisions sometimes that can cost you a match or win you a match. I’d like to think that we shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place but the simple fact is that we were. We didn’t get the rub of the green.”

O’Neill’s view was supported by some Sunday Game panellists.

Colm O’Rourke

As far as I was concerned, there was nothing wrong with this goal. (Tommy) Moolick had his eyes firmly on the ball, broke it down, Cathal McNally doing what every good corner-forward should do in following up. You’re pandering to these goalkeepers.”

Ciaran Whelan

“I think the goalkeeper never has control of the ball, I think the referee saw it from out the field.”

But the other member of the panel felt Tipperary referee Derek O’Mahoney made the right call.

Pat Spillane

The ball was still in play, he fouls the goalkeeper, the ball is still in play. Free out.”

What do you think, should the goal have been allowed? Let us know.
