WEXFORD BOOKED THEIR place at the semi-final stage of the Leinster senior football championship for the third time in four years tonight in Pearse Park.

They had to withstand a second-half fightback from Longford before Ciaran Lyng and Kevin O’Regan notched the late points that clinched a two-point success. The victory propels Aidan O’Brien’s side to a semi-final meeting with Dublin or Laois on June 29th.

Lyng was the star man for Wexford as he showed his class and his early goal helped Wexford go ahead 1-3 to 0-2.

Longford fought back to cut the deficit to 1-5 to 0-7 approaching half-time but then three points in quick succession by Wexford with Kevin O’Grady, Adrian Flynn and Brian Malone on the mark put them into a 1-8 to 0-7 lead by the interval.

Wexford extended their advantage to be 1-11 to 0-9 clear by the 49th minute but were rocked by Longford hitting the net through Francis McGee soon after. Longford were emboldened by that strike and after drawing level, they hit the front through Enda Williams with eight minutes remaining.

However Wexford finished the game brilliantly with Lyng landing a brace of points and substitute O’Regan also raising a white flag to seal their victory.
