What we learned this weekend...

From Drumcondra to Los Angeles, there’s plenty of lessons to take from this weekend’s action.

1. This is the way to win a tournament

Andy Roddick’s diving volley came on match point of the final of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships. He needed every inch of that stretch to sneak past Canadian Milos Raonic 7-6 (7), 6-7 (11) 7-5.

2. Brian O’Driscoll bases his ballot box decisions on Roddy Doyle characters and candidates’ resemblance thereto

The Ireland skipper suggested those in Dublin North Central vote Finian McGrath as their first preference on Friday. Or as O’Driscoll tweeted: ‘Vote Georgie Burgess number 1!’ along with this picture:

3. Blake Griffin can jump

Well, we knew that. But the NBA sensation took victory in the much-hyped Slam Dunk contest with this effort over a car.

Everyone gets a gospel choir to sing at work right?

This wasn’t bad either.

4. Kilkenny have a football team…

… And they suck! On a busy weekend of gaelic games in which the focus was on the start the Spring Series at Croker, Kerry’s trip to Mayo and Cork’s visit to Nowlan Park, the Cats’ gaelic football side managed to score exactly nothing against Leitrim.

It’s they were made go through a pre-qualification tournament with San Marino and Luxembourg in my opinion. *

5. You can score a hole-in-one in hockey

As Deadspin explain: “The University of Denver Pioneers men’s hockey team had been on a two-game losing streak, but were up 2-1 less than five minutes into the second period. That’s when freshman Dave Makowski fired a wrist shot from next to his goalkeeper. It travelled the length of the ice and went past Michigan Tech’s goalie Kevin Genoe.”

*Lesson four may be the disaffected ramblings of an embitttered Cork native.
