IRISH DUO JAMES McGee and Louk Sorensen saw their Wimbledon aspirations fall short at the first hurdle today as both fell to defeat in the opening qualifying round of the men’s singles competition.
James McGee lost out to Aljaz Bedene from Slovenia in straight sets – 6-4, 6-4. The Irish 27 year-old had been hoping to build on the promise that he showed in the qualifying for the French Open last month when he won the first two rounds before losing out in two sets to Italian Andrea Arnaboldi.
Sorensen fared better today at the start of his Wimbledon qualifying match against Tunisian player Malek Jaziri as he won the opening set 6-2. But then Jaziri took over to take the next two sets – 7-5, 6-2 – and progress to the next stage.
It was a disappointing exit for Sorensen, who had previously reached Grand Slam events in 2010 in the Australian Open and in 2011 in the US Open.
