Sacked in the morning: Mick McCarthy fired by Wolves

WOLVES HAVE SACKED manager Mick McCarthy with immediate effect.

In a short statement issued this morning, the Midlands club said that they took the “difficult decision” to terminate McCarthy’s contract after a disappointing run of league form which has plunged the club into relegation trouble.

Wolves are currently 18th, two points off the bottom of the table, and have picked up just 14 points from their last 22 games, a dismal run made worse by a 5-1 defeat at home to rivals West Brom in yesterday’s Black Country derby.

After leaving the pitch to a chorus of angry boos from his own supporters, McCarthy publicly apologised for the side’s performance, which he described as “one of the most disappointing afternoons of my career.”

“I apologise for the performance and I’ve never done that before,” he said (see ESPN). “But the way we capitulated in the last half-hour is not associated with my teams.”

Steve Bruce has been installed as the bookmakers’ early favourite to replace McCarthy, with Dave Jones — Wolves manager from 2001 to 2004 — Neil Warnock, and Huddersfield manager Lee Clark also linked with the post.

Assistant manager Terry Connor will take team training until a new manager is appointed.

McCarthy took over at Wolves in the summer of 2006 and oversaw the club’s promotion to the Premier League, winning the Championship in 2008/2009.

Wolves finished 15th in their first season back in the top flight before narrowly escaping relegation last year, dodging the drop by a single point despite losing 3-2 to Blackburn Rovers on the final day of the season.

“The Board would like to place on record their sincere thanks and appreciation to Mick McCarthy and he leaves with the very best wishes of everyone connected to the club,” Wolves’ statement said.
