Woman punched in face and slashed with blade after refusing request for cigarette

Police are searching for four attackers.

A WOMAN IN Derry is recovering after being subjected to a horrific sectarian attack on Duke Street last night.

The woman, in her 20s, was walking through the subway tunnel beside the railway station at 10.30pm when she was approached by two men and two women.

One of the men asked her for a cigarette. When she declined the request, he punched her in the face and began shouting sectarian abuse at her.

A woman from the group then walked up to her and sliced her in the face with “some type of weapon”, police said.

The four attackers, all thought to be in their 20s, then made off.

The victim was treated in hospital for a bruised and cut face.

One of the female offenders is described as being about 20 years old, with long blonde curly hair. She was wearing a yellow top, denim leggings and fluorescent footwear.

Police in Derry say they are treating the incident as a hate crime. An appeal for witnesses has been made.
