Yaya Toure: I thought I was joining Man Utd from Barcelona

The Ivory Coast international assumed it was United who were in for him back in 2010.

YAYA TOURE REVEALED he thought he was signing for Manchester United and not Manchester City when he left Barcelona in 2010.

The Ivorian moved to the Etihad Stadium outfit for £24 million and went on to become one of the driving forces during the club’s most successful period, inspiring them to two Premier League titles and an FA Cup triumph.

However, Toure admitted that he only realised that it was City he was joining, rather than their local rivals United, when his agent revealed that they played in a blue strip.

“My agent had to tell me it was the team in the blue shirts,” Toure confessed to the Daily Mail.

“At the time Manchester United were putting Manchester City in the shadows. It was unbelievable. Manchester United is a big club and I respect that club a lot.”

Toure had travelled to face Real Madrid, starting Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final second-leg loss despite recent injury struggles.

And though Manuel Pellegrini’s men bowed out to los Blancos 1-0 on aggregate – missing the chance to contest their first European final ever – Toure was still satisfied to have written his name into club history by featuring in their maiden Champions League semi-final.

“To be in this squad that is making history, it’s unbelievable,’ Toure added.
