IT WAS ALWAYS going to create some controversy but Giovanni Trapattoni’s Euro 2012 squad announcement was generally greeted with very little surprise, save for the sad news regarding James McCarthy’s father which rules the Wigan midfielder out of this summer’s tournament.
The squad, which includes three goalkeepers, seven defenders, eight midfielders and five strikers, contained many of the players responsible for Ireland’s qualification in the first place.
However, there was no space for Paul Green, Wes Hoolahan or Seamus Coleman, whom many believed could have made the plane to Poland.
