4 days to Euro 2012: Imagine if we had actually won something!

Ireland were given a hero’s welcome when they returned from Germany in ’88.

“WHEN WE CAME back on the plane, no one had any idea what was going on,” remembers Ray Houghton on RTE Radio 1 documentary ’We’ve got a game to win’.

It wasn’t until about 15 minutes before we were about to land that Jack turned around to the lads and said ‘by the way, you might want to smarten yourself up as there might be a few people at the airport to see you!’”

It was one of those occasions that everyone will claim to have been there and it probably looked as if they were on the day. Several hundred thousand fans turned up at Dublin Airport and lined the streets from there to O’Connell Street to welcome Jack’s Army home from Germany.
