'Amazing evening, perfect result': Schweinsteiger thanks Man Utd fans after shock return

The 32-year-old has been ostracised since the arrival of Mourinho but made a surprise appearance against West Ham.

BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER HAS thanked Manchester United fans for their support after making his long-awaited return for the Red Devils during their 4-1 win over West Ham on Wednesday evening.

The German midfielder was forced to train with the club’s reserves and told to work on his fitness by Jose Mourinho as his time at Old Trafford looked to have come to an end.

However the Portuguese boss brought Schweinsteiger back into the fold in November, allowing him to train with the first-team and included him in the matchday squad for Wednesday’s cup tie.

While Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera started in the midfield roles, Schweinsteiger replaced Anthony Martial, who scored twice during the game, after 86 minutes and received a standing ovation from the onlooking home fans.

The 32-year-old was cheered each time he received the ball and has thanked the Red Devils fans on his social media accounts, saying: “Amazing evening with a perfect result. Thanks for the warm welcome at Old Trafford!”

Schweinsteiger made 31 appearances under Louis van Gaal last season but is yet to feature in the Premier League under Mourinho so far and is thought to be on his way out once the January transfer window opens.
