IT’S UNCLEAR WHAT started all of this, but it got out of hand pretty quickly.
Bayern Munich were in Athens last night for their Champions League opener against Olympiacos, and there were ugly scenes before kickoff, as police clashed with a group of Bayern supporters in the Karaiskakis Stadium.
From the video footage available, the police were being quite heavy-handed with the supporters, none of whom seemed to be fighting back.
The violence didn’t continue after kickoff though, as the Bayern fans watched their side open their campaign with a 3-0 win.
A spokesperson for Bayern Munich said that while some of their fans acted inappropriately, the reaction of police was over the top.
“There was unnecessary loutish behaviour from our fans and disproportionate use of the baton by police.”
