WALLABIES GREAT David Campese is half hoping England beat Australia this weekend so it helps bring an end to Robbie Deans’ term as coach.

Campese, who scored 64 tries in a stellar 101-Test career, labelled the New Zealander the ‘worst thing’ that has happened to Australian rugby.

He told English newspaper The Telegraph that Deans’ team is incapable of performing the basics and are wrecking the Wallabies’ hard-earned reputation.

“We’ve got a team at the moment that can’t catch and can’t pass,” Campese said. ”Wallaby teams in the past were never like this. Anyone who knows anything about Australian rugby knows what it’s famous for – loops, angles, switches, counter-attack, creative play.

“Where’s all that gone? We can’t even pass properly. There’s something missing. There’s not the fear factor about the Wallabies any more and that’s a sad state of affairs.”

Deans is under renewed pressure to keep his job following Australia’s heavy 33-6 loss to France last weekend. The heat will be turned up further should the Wallabies be beaten by England at Twickenham on Saturday. Campese, who is based in Dublin, admitted he would not be shattered if the Wallabies lost to England as it could spell the end of Deans’ reign.

“I don’t want the boys to lose – I played for Australia and it’s clearly hard to go against them, especially when it’s against the Poms — but if Australia wins, he (Deans) stays,” Campese said. ”I just want him to go. He’s the worst thing that has ever happened to Australian rugby.

“Deans has destroyed Australian rugby and I want him to go.”
