TRAINED BY JESSICA Harrington and ridden by Robbie Power, Sizing John has won the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Having won the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown last month, the seven-year-old 7/1 shot powered to victory at Prestbury Park.

Minella Rocco finished second, while Richard Johnson guided Native River to third place.

Fan favourite Cue Card fell at the third-last fence for the second consecutive year, but it has since been confirmed that he has escaped unscathed.

The Ruby Walsh-Willie Mullins partnership looked like they may top off a huge few days through Djakadam but the horse hit the penultimate fence, with the eventual winner thriving as a result.

“That was absolutely amazing, the way he jumped and travelled,” ‘Queen of Cheltenham’ Harrington said after.

“That was absolutely fantastic. This was unreal, unreal.”

Earlier in the day, Willie Mullins and Paul Townend had an impressive double in quick succession.

Artic Fire produced a huge finish to take the Randox Health County Hurdle, fighting off L’Ami Serge and Ozzie the Oscar to take the title, and Penhill followed suit in the next race to claim the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle.

Defi Du Seuil’s won the first race of the day, running to victory in the JCB Triumph Hurdle for Philip Hobbs.
