Clontarf GAA set a world record thanks to Jack McCaffrey and 1,499 friends

The Dublin footballer took part in a mass training session with his local club.

DUBLIN FOOTBALL STAR Jack McCaffrey and 1,499 others entered the Guinness Book of Records on Monday after taking part in the biggest ever GAA training session.

The novel idea called for 1,200 people to head along to the GAA club for a large, yet organised, training session. To commemorate 1,000 years since the 1014 Battle of Clontarf, the session started at 10 minutes and 14 seconds past 4pm.

As it was, some 1,500 turned out, including McCaffrey and RTE’s Damien O’Meara, to take part in the drills, exercises and games.

A message on the club’s Facebook page reads: “Go raibh míle maith agaibh to everyone who turned up today to make history in CLG Chluain Tarbh own Battle of Clontarf.”

It continues, “A special word of thanks to everyone who volunteered to support the day especially all our mentors and imreoirí who acted as coaches and stewards. Thanks to all the players, their parents, family, cousins, neighbours and whoever else you dragged along today!”

McCaffrey, who led the Dublin U21s to success over Roscommon in the All-Ireland final on Saturday, tweeted:
