OLYMPIC BRONZE MEDALIST Michael Conlan is the leading Northern Ireland athlete on the second day of competition at the Commonwealth Games.

With no boxing yesterday, the bantamweight will be a heavy favourite when he fights in the first bout of the Games at 13.00 against Mathew Martin of the Pacific island nation Nauru.

Flyweight Ruairi Dalton will fight at 18.40 with welterweight Steven Donnelly in the ring at 19.15.

Jordan Sloan will be the first Northern Irish athlete in the pool for the 200m freestyle heat at 10.44. Then it’s the women’s turn as Rachel Bethel, Danielle Hill and Paralympian Bethany Firth enter the sprint distance 50m freestyle.

Firth will face a quick turnaround to be back out on the black for the 100m backstroke, after Michael Dawson goes in the male equivalent of the event at 11.17.

Judoka Kirsty Kee will compete in her preliminary round in the 63kg category at 10.35, skeet shooters David Christie and Clement Buchanen are under way from 9.00 and in badminton, the mixed team will take on Mauritius at 14.00.

We have to wait until tomorrow evening to see 2013 world champion Martyn Irvine in the velodrome, but today James Brown and Dave Readle compete together in the 1km tandem time trial.
