IT WAS ONE of the best team goals of the summer, a breathtaking team move the length of the pitch in Tullamore in June.

Cathal Dunbar may have netted Wexford’s second goal in that Leinster U21 semi-final against Offaly but it was Conor McDonald’s audacious flick that was the precursor for the strike.

McDonald bats away any personal praise for his score and instead points to the innate understanding that exists in this Wexford team.

“I think it was just a perfect example of this actual U21 team.

“I think it’s the first time I’ve ever played with one of the lads in Shane Murphy. The rest of the players went through the grades from U14 up to minor, all through the grades.

“That group of players just always stuck together. With that, you get comfortable.

You know each others strengths, you know what other players can do.

“Even just runs…you know where lads run, it’s kind of unconscious at this stage, and I suppose that was an example of it.”

Have there been similar scores that McDonald was at the heart of?

“Well you try things but, when they don’t come off, you think ‘ah, that was a bad touch, I should have tried to get it into him’.

“Sometimes you try things and that paid off. I suppose it exploded there for a little while.”

Will standards drop in Tipperary hurling again following Eamon O’Shea’s departure?

‘It’s a known fact, watching some of our games – The ‘Golden Years’ – they’re dreadful games’
