Former Ireland underage international sees Barnsley loan spell cut short

Martin O’Neill is hoping to persuade the youngster to declare for the Boys in Green.

ARSENAL YOUNGSTER DANIEL Crowley has been sent back from his Barnsley loan spell early.

The Coventry-born former Ireland underage international, who has more recently represented England U19s, made 13 appearances for the Tykes since joining the club on loan in the summer.

However, with the club currently languishing in 21st position in League One, Crowley has been deemed surplus to requirements at Oakwell, having originally agreed to play with the side until January.

The Mirror reports that insiders at Barnsley felt Crowley was not ready for first-team football, with the club reportedly now hoping to sign a more experienced replacement on loan.

The decision is another setback for Arsene Wenger, who criticised the youngsters that took part in the Gunners’ surprise 3-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup on Tuesday.

Despite representing England more recently at underage level, Crowley has refused to rule out playing for the Ireland senior side in future.

Martin O’Neill last month confirmed his interest in attempting to persuade the youngster to switch his international allegiance, commenting:

“I spoke to his father and we had a very civil conversation. He’s a very, very pleasant man.

“We would have a real, genuine interest in that. I think the young lad has really decent ability.”
