The Long Goodbye

Didier Drogba to leave Chelsea...again but where's he off to next?

The veteran attacker wants one more season elsewhere before retiring.

DIDIER DROGBA HAS confirmed that he’ll leave Chelsea after the club’s final game of the season against Sunderland this afternoon.

It’s the second time the attacker will say goodbye to the club.

He originally departed the Blues back in 2012, after he scored the winning penalty in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich but returned at the start of this season, signing a one-year contract.

The 37-year-old has been used sparingly by Jose Mourinho this term though and has only managed four Premier League goals. Still, his contributions ensured he won another Premier League winners medal – his fourth as a Chelsea player.

He’s not retiring however and has outlined his plan to play elsewhere for one more season.

“I want to play for at least one more season and in order to play more football I feel I need to go to another club”, he told the official Chelsea website.

“All the fans know my love for Chelsea and I hope to be back here in the future in another role.”

Now, attention turns to what club will sign him.

The smart money would be on a switch to Major League Soccer with New York City FC still having one Designated Player spot to fill – currently David Villa and Frank Lampard (who’ll join imminently from Manchester City) are the two NYC FC players who fall outside the salary cap.

Drogba turned down a move to MLS in 2012, and an ill-fated spell in China with Shanghai Shenhua followed instead.
