LOI Division One wrap: As you were at top following Shels and Longford wins

There were no changes at the upper end of the table, as the top two both prevailed.

LONGFORD TOWN EARNED a convincing 3-0 win over Shamrock Rovers B in Tallaght Stadium this evening, as they maintained their six-point lead at the top.

Following a goalless first-half, two quick-fire strikes from Mark Salmon and David O’Sullivan put the visitors in control of the game.

And subsequently, with the game all but over, O’Sullivan got his second and Longford’s third of the night in second-half stoppage time, to consign the hosts to another defeat, which means they remain rooted in seventh position, six points behind nearest rivals Waterford.

Meanwhile, second place Shelbourne kept up the pressure on the leaders with a 1-0 victory over Galway FC in Eamonn Deacy Park.

Gareth Coughlan got the only goal of the game with a fine finish on the hour mark to prevent his side falling further behind in the title race.

Finally, Finn Harps drew 2-2 at home against Wexford Youths, as both sides consolidated their mid-table positions.

Josh Mailey opened the scoring after just two minutes, before Ben Ryan hit back for the visitors on 16.

Kevin McHugh restored Finn Harps’ advantage 12 minutes into the second half, before the same player missed a penalty after 72 minutes.

And the hosts were left to rue McHugh’s missed opportunity, as Danny Furlong converted a Wexford spot kick with 13 minutes remaining.

The hosts ultimately ended the game frustrated at having to share the spoils, and their woe was exacerbated in the dying stages as Caoimhin Bonner got himself sent off after receiving a second yellow.
