FITZGIBBON CUP HOLDERS University of Limerick beat Carlow IT 3-18 to 0-14 last night to set up a mouth-watering semi-final against competition hosts UCC.
Carlow kept pace for much of the first half and only trailed by a single point at the break, but UL showed the strength of their panel after the restart with all three goals coming from the bench.
A rapid-fire brace from Mikey Heffernan gave the holders some room to breathe before Joe Gallagher fired home from an angle late on to round out a 13-point win.
“We were very, very worried at half-time,” UL manager Ger Cunningham revealed afterwards. “They were a very useful side and they frightened us in the first half.”
“But we knew that if we could keep our discipline [and] don’t give TJ Reid the chances from the placed balls in the second half, which I think we did, we just pulled away then.”
Yesterday afternoon, UCC ground out a 1-23 to 2-13 win against UCD at the Mardyke in Cork.
Limerick IT and Cork IT both won on Tuesday night and will meet in the tournament’s other semi-final.
