L’EQUIPE SUGGESTED IRELAND had the better of the first half in Paris at the weekend and only a “remarkable” French defence kept the home team in the game, while adding that there was a strong “contrast” with France’s growing dominance in the second period.
The publication added that the French side benefited from a more “direct” approach after half-time.
Writing for Rugbyrama, Fabien Pomies suggested that France’s substitutions were key, adding that while it was not an entirely convincing win, the victory was important for the confidence of the French team after their disappointing World Cup.
Midi Olympique quotes Jonathan Sexton’s assertion that the French are a much-improved outfit from the team they faced in the World Cup.
The same publication notes that it is France’s first win over Ireland for five years, calling the victory “beautiful” and “brave as hell”.
Bruno Lesprit, writing for Le Monde, called it a “surprise victory” for France.
The journalist also highlighted Ireland’s first-half superiority, adding that their dominance was “not only” due to the boot of Sexton.
Finally, Le Figaro claims the French team “showed character” to win at the weekend, but there remains a degree of skepticism, with the paper adding that they must “confirm” their recent progress in their upcoming game against Wales.
The paper also suggests the team are “on the path to rebirth” and paid tribute to the hosts’ “iron defence”.
