Galway and Derry both hit three goals en route to victory while Tyrone see off Cavan

It was a busy day of action in Division 2.

GALWAY, DERRY AND Tyrone all picked up opening afternoon league wins in Division 2 of the Allianz football league.

Goals were the order of the day for both Galway and Derry en route to their victories over Laois and Fermanagh respectively.

Galway saw off Laois by 3-12 to 1-10 to record an impressive away win in Portlaoise a week after they claimed the FBD League title.

All the good work was done by Galway in the opening period with Adrian Varley and Damien Comer both netting.

Laois trailed 2-6 to 0-1 at the interval with Donie Kingston striking their solitary point while Kingston also missed an early penalty as Thomas Dolan produced a fine save.

There was some brief respite for Laois when Daniel O’Reilly notched an early second-half goal but Comer’s goal in the 46th minute essentially finished the game as a contest.

Derry trailed at the break against Fermanagh by 1-6 to 1-5 in their clash with Ruairi Corrigan netting for the Erne county and Benny Heron bagging the Oak Leaf county’s goal.

Derry drew level at 1-7 apiece by the 40th minute before they then accelerated clear on the scoreboard with Cailean O’Boyle and Mark Lynch both raising green flags to seal success for Damian Barton’s side by 3-13 to 1-10.

Meanwhile fresh from a fifth consecutive Dr McKenna Cup title, Tyrone saw off Cavan by two points at Healy Park in Omagh this afternoon in their league opener.

It was 0-5 apiece at the interval with Lee Brennan showing up well for Tyrone as he shot 0-3 while Martin Reilly hit a brace for Cavan.

Gearoid McKiernan put Cavan narrowly in front after the interval before Tyrone reeled off three without reply to forge ahead.

Cian Mackey cut the gap to a single point at one juncture but Tyrone were never level again with Justin McMahon and Conor McAliskey adding the late insurance points to seal a 0-10 to 0-8 success.
