Faherty the match-winner as Galway overcome Bohs to soar up the table

Tommy Dunne’s men are up to second in the SSE Airtricity League thanks to their 1-0 victory at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Bohemians 0

VINNY FAHERTY SCORED 12 minutes from time to hand Galway United their third win of the season at a windswept Eamonn Deacy Park.

It was a deserved three points for the home side, who looked likeliest to hit a winner in the second-half, with Faherty and Padraic Cunningham a handful up front.

Bohs could have stole a point in injury-time, but full-back Lorcan Fitzgerald hit the side-netting after he broke through, and the Gypsies left empty-handed.

Bohemians, who drew 3-3 against Wexford Youths last time out, looked to have fallen behind in the fourth minute when Killian Cantwell directed Ryan Connolly’s corner goalwards.

Fresh from his 14-minute hat-trick against the Mayo League last week, Padraic Cunningham was on the mark again and flicked to the net, but the linesman ruled out the goal for offside.

With a gale angling across the pitch in favour of the home side in the opening half, Bohs keeper Dean Delany struggled to clear the halfway line with his goal kicks, while Galway United also failed to come to terms the conditions and frequently overcooked long passes from deep.

Despite facing the elements, it was Bohemians that enjoyed the better chances in the opening half.

Paddy Kavanagh totally mis-hit a chance at the back post after 15 minutes when he sole in late behind Stephen Walsh, and five minutes later Conor Winn denied Ayman Ben Mohammed with a smart stop when he cut in from the left after he hurdled Cantwell’s lunge.

The second quarter was not as entertaining as the first, as both teams still couldn’t master the wind, while the chances of the opening 20 minutes were also absent.

It was no harm to see referee Ray Matthews call a halt to the action when Winn couldn’t stop the ball rolling enough to take an added-time free kick.

United started the second-half brightly and after 50 minutes they had a great chance to force an opener.

Kevin Delaney made plenty of ground down the left and picked out the unmarked Faherty inside the area, but Dean Delany managed to get his fingertips to the striker’s curling effort that looked destined for the bottom corner.

With the ball holding up into the wind, the Galway United front two of Faherty and Cunningham began to have a greater influence on proceedings and a good run from Faherty in the 63rd minute appeared to have prised open the Bohs rearguard.

And as Faherty tried to square the ball to his striking partner the ball struck Derek Pender on the hand, but Matthews ignored the vociferous home pleas for a penalty.

Fifteen minutes from time Faherty had a shot cleared off the line by Daniel Byrne as Delany lost Ryan Connolly’s cross in the wind, but three minutes later Faherty stretched to score from a brilliant Cunningham cross.

And at the death Bohs’ best chance to score went unclaimed by Fitzgerald as the three points were claimed by United.
