Shaw on the double as Shamrock Rovers come away from Galway with the points

Stephen Bradley’s men recorded their second win of the season at Eamonn Deacy Park tonight.

Galway United 1

Shamrock Rovers 2

GARY SHAW WAS on the double as Shamrock Rovers bounced back from Friday night’s defeat at home to Derry City with victory at Galway United.

Rovers had only won once in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division this season and failed to break-down a ten-man Derry side last time out.

But they went ahead very early on against Galway United and Shaw’s goal gave them a 1-0 half-time lead in front of 1,051. Ronan Murray equalised after half-time but Shaw sealed the win with his second.

The hosts had a terrible record against Shamrock Rovers in the league – Galway had not beaten Rovers since 2006 and only had three draws to show from their previous 26 league meetings.

This defeat means Galway have now lost three of their four games in the league in 2017, and new manager Shane Keegan is yet to win a competitive fixture.

Shaw scored the winner the last time these sides met in Galway, and he popped up inside two minutes, to latch onto a Ronan Finn pass, and finish into the bottom left corner of Conor Winn’s goal.

Galway had their chances to hit back before half time, but Rovers’ high-line held them out, and they were caught offside twice when they were in promising positions.

It was 1-0 at half time but Murray pounced on an error from Daniel Devine and his deflected effort tied the game up in the 58th minute. However, seven minutes later Shaw doubled his tally with another deflected shot.

Galway United: Conor Winn; Colm Horgan, Lee Grace, Stephen Folan, Marc Ludden; Gary Shanahan (Conor Melody 78), Alex Byrne (Jesse Devers 89), Gavin Holohan, David Cawley, Ronan Murray; Padraic Cunningham (Vinny Faherty 17).

Shamrock Rovers: Tomer Chencinski; Simon Madden, Daniel Devine, David Webster, Trevor Clarke; Darren Meenan (Paul Corry 69), Ronan Finn, Roberto Lopes, Ryan Connolly, Brandon Miele; Gary Shaw (Sean Boyd 75).

Referee: Robert Hennessy (Clare).
