Galway to play Waterford in All-Ireland minor hurling final

There was little to separate the teams in the minor semi final but questions will be raised about Hawkeye.

Galway 0-23 – Limerick 0-20 AET

GALWAY WILL PLAY Waterford in the All-Ireland MHC final after overcoming Limerick in extra time after a controversial encounter in Croke Park today.

The game had a surreal start when what looked a clear point from Limerick’s Barry Nash – which the umpire awarded – was referred to HawkEye by referee Fergal Horgan and, despite the system seemingly showing the ball going over, it was signalled ‘miss’.

Limerick soon made amends though and held a three points to one lead after five minutes thanks to points from Cian Lynch (2) and Dean Coleman; Conor Shaughnessy raising the white flag for Galway.

It was the Tribesmen, however, who dominated the next ten minutes, scoring four unanswered points. There was little to separate the two for the remainder of the half and the 0-8 – 0-8 scoreline at the break was a fair reflection on the game.

After Brian Molly and David Dempsey traded points to begin the second half, Pat Ryan almost scored the first goal of the game but his flick hit the base of the Galway post and bounced clear.

At no point during the second half did either side get more than a point ahead but it looked as if Galway had won it when Adrian Morrissey pointed with 20 seconds to go in injury time.

However, the referee awarded Limerick a soft free from the resulting puck-out which Ryan Lynch slotted over to send the game to extra time.

It was Galway who had the better of the first extra period taking the game’s first two point lead since the 15th minute.

Three unanswered points either side of half time in extra time though put Limerick back in the lead before back to back Conor Whelan points but Galway ahead with just four minutes to play.

A chance for David Dempsey to level dropped right and wide with two minutes to play and two scores from Ronan O’Meara and Eanna Burke sealed a three point win for the Tribesmen.

However, Limerick will feel hard done by after that early HawkEye decision cost them what could have been a crucial score.
