Gavin Henson suspended by Cardiff Blues after incident on a flight

Mystery surrounds the circumstances behind the 30-year-old’s latest brush with authority.

CARDIFF BLUES HAVE confirmed that Gavin Henson has been suspended by the club, following an incident on a flight back from Scotland.

The squad was returning from Glasgow, where they had fallen to a 31-3 defeat to the Warriors, in the early hours of Saturday morning. While the details of what happened on the plane have not been disclosed, the 30-year-old’s days with the RaboDirect PRO12 outfit could be numbered.

A statement was released by the club which read: “Cardiff Blues can confirm that Gavin Henson has been suspended with immediate effect following an incident on the flight back from Scotland after their match against Glasgow Warriors last night [Friday].”

The Cardiff Blues management will meet on Monday morning to discuss the matter further, while the airline in question — Flybe — said it would also be carrying out an investigation.

A spokesman for the company said: “With regard to flight BE3431 from Glasgow to Cardiff on March 31, Flybe can confirm that it is gathering information from its own staff as well as those at both airports and will make no further comment at this time.”

Henson has had a career littered with controversy, and has made more of a career out of celebrity reality shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and The Bachelor than rugby since injuring his ankle in March 2009 and taking an 18-month break from the game five months later.

He has not appeared for Wales since sustaining a wrist injury in the 19-9 victory over England at the Millennium Stadium last August, in a warm-up game for the Rugby World Cup.

Since moving back to Wales from Toulon in October he has played just eight matches and is yet to score a try.
