Holly Holm suffers controversial loss at UFC 208 as new champion is crowned

Germaine de Randamie won the UFC women’s featherweight belt last night.

HOLLY HOLM WAS beaten in controversial circumstances by Germaine de Randamie at UFC 208 in Brooklyn last night.

The Netherlands fighter became the first UFC women’s featherweight champion, but her American opponent was unhappy with the manner of De Randamie’s victory.

De Randamie won 48-47 in a unanimous judges’ decision, but crucially should have had a point deducted, after illegally landing a punch on her opponent after the bell in the third round.

The new champion later denied the controversial strike was intentional, while Holm told MMA Junkie after the match that she wanted a rematch.

“When you have more than half the people saying the fight should have gone the other way, usually that warrants a rematch. So that would be awesome,” the US star said.

On the other hand, Cris Cyborg — who was in attendance last night and is currently serving a doping ban — has also been talked up as an alternative next title contender.

Elsewhere, Anderson Silva beat Derek Brunson in another controversial fight, with some observers feeling the American had done enough to win.

Jacare Souza defeated Tim Boetsch via submission and now looks on course for a UFC middleweight title shot.

Meanwhile, veteran Brazilian fighter Glover Teixeira convincingly earned a fourth win in five fights at the expense of US opponent Jared Cannonier.

And finally on the main card, Dustin Poirier overcame fellow American Jim Miller via majority decision, with two judges awarding the fight in the former’s favour, while a third deemed the bout to be a draw.

Undercard results:

Belal Muhammad beat via unanimous decision

Wilson Reis beat Ulka Sasaki via unanimous decision

Islam Makhachev beat Nik Lentz via unanimous decision

Rick Glenn beat Phillipe Nover via split decision

Ryan LaFlare beat Roan Carneiro via unanimous decision
