Independiente fans react to relegation by lobbing chairs at club president

They don’t take failure lightly in South American football.

INDEPENDIENTE, ONE OF Argentina’s most famous clubs and seven times winners of the Copa Libertadores, were relegated for the first time in their history two weeks ago.

Their fate was sealed when they were defeated 1-0 by San Lorenzo in the penultimate round of first division matches.

When club president Javier Cantero held a press conference on Friday, fans grabbed the chance to vent their anger – and proceeded to lob missiles, including fold up chairs and a table, onto the stage before the president ran for cover.
