IRELAND SUPPORTERS WILL be recognised by Uefa for their “outstanding contribution” to this summer’s European championships.
The Boys in Green earned huge praised after showing exemplary behaviour at Euro 2016 in France as they followed Martin O’Neill’s men to Paris, Bordeaux, Lille and Lyon before the team was eliminated from in the last-16 by the host nation and beaten finalists.
Along with the football associations of Northern Ireland, Wales and Iceland, the FAI are set to be presented with a commemorative plaque by European football’s governing body next month.
Euro 2016 was a celebration of football and this is thanks in large part to the passion and dedication of fans at all stadiums in France,” said new Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin.
“Uefa wanted to reward some of the groups of supporters that were particularly enthusiastic and passionate during the tournament so congratulations to the national associations who are receiving this award.”
