13 hurling stars who are playing Stateside this summer

A mix of rising young stars and some experienced older heads are all plying their trade in America.

Benny Dunne – Tipperary

THE 35-YEAR-OLD enjoyed a 10-year inter-county career with Tipperary and he is one of a number of All-Ireland senior medalists jetting off to the States for the summer. Dunne, who won three Munster titles, will hurl with New York side Tipperary.

Patrick Cronin – Cork

The Bishopstown forward is off to San Francisco where he’ll play with Naomh Padraig. Cronin, who captained the Rebels to the All-Ireland final in 2013, was cut from the Cork panel prior to their Munster campaign earlier this year.

Chris Crummey – Dublin

Crummey, who was sent-off in the first-half of Dublin’s recent defeat to Cork in the All-Ireland qualifiers, is bound for New York. He’ll line out for the Ulster club in the Big Apple. Crummey captained the Sky Blues to Leinster minor glory in 2011 and won the senior equivalent as part of Anthony Daly’s extended squad in 2013.

Sean Tobin – Limerick

The Munster medalist will represent San Francisco side Na Fianna this summer. The 26-year-old left the Limerick squad back in May due to a lack of game time during the league. He scored two points in Limerick’s 2013 Munster final win over Cork.

Neil McManus – Antrim

McManus indicated last September that he’d be taking a year out from inter-county action. The 27-year-old played a key role in Ruairi Og, Cushendall’s run to the All-Ireland club hurling final in March, where they were defeated by Na Piarsaigh. He’ll link up with Sean Tobin at Na Fianna in San Francisco.

Brian Carroll – Offaly

Carroll retired from inter-county hurling in January having served Offaly with distinction for 14 seasons. Shortly afterwards he said that he planned to spend the summer abroad for the first time with his wife. The 33-year-old teacher will line out for Naomh Padraig in San Francisco.

Jack Guiney – Wexford

The talented Rathnure forward quit the Wexford panel in February due to personal reasons. Guiney, 23, was Wexford’s top scorer in the league last season when he hit 2-26 in five games. Guiney joins Brian Carroll at San Francisco club Naomh Padraig.

Oisin O’Rourke – Dublin

A former Dublin minor and U21, O’Rourke notched a hat-trick against Dublin while playing for UCD back in January. The Kilmacud Crokes player jetted off to play with Ulster in New York.

Stephen Moylan – Cork

Moylan was a useful forward on the Cork team who made his breakthrough in 2012. He was among several high profile players axed by Kieran Kingston from the Rebels squad in April. He’s off to San Francisco where he’ll line out for Na Fianna.

Jamie Coughlan – Cork

Kingston released another experienced player in Jamie Coughlan before the league even began in 2016. Coughlan scored two goals on his championship debut for Cork in 2011 and featured regularly in the side over the next few years. He joins Boston side Galway for the summer.

Conor Kenny – Tipperary

Borrisleigh attacker Kenny was culled from the Tipperary squad in March, despite putting in some promising early season performances. The former Kildare player scored three points from play against Dublin and two against Kilkenny, but he was deemed surplus to requirements by Michael Ryan. Na Fianna in San Francisco will benefit from Kenny’s presence.

Eibhear Quilligan – Clare

Quilligan was a sub-goalie on the Banner’s U21s when they won a third straight All-Ireland U21 title in 2014. The Feakle stopper started for the county’s minors in 2012. He’ll line out for Cu Chulainn in Chicago.

Cathal Parlon – Offaly

A clubmate of Brian Carroll’s in Offaly, Parlon joins him in San Francisco with Naomh Padraig. An experienced wing-back, Parlon started all of Offaly’s championship games in 2014 before suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury the following summer. It meant he would miss several months of the 2016 season and the Coolderry man opted out of the Offaly squad to spent time travelling.
