JAMES MCGEE’S QUEST to reach the Wimbledon main draw for the first time has ended at the second qualifying round after the Irish number slipped to defeat this evening.

After conjuring a thrilling comeback to beat Spain’s Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo on Monday, McGee faced a much stiffest task in the form of fifth seed Andrey Rublev in the second round.

The 19-year-old Russian, ranked 92nd in the world, has already qualified for the Australian and French Open this year and proved to be too strong for McGee on the grass courts of Roehampton.

McGee had battled back from losing the first set to bring the game into a decider but Rublev pulled clear to record a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory.

Monday’s win was the Castleknock native’s first at Wimbledon but his bid to be the first Irishman since Conor Niland to reach the main draw at SW19 falls short.

It means all Irish eyes will be on Simon Carr, who will attempt to take his place in boys’ tournament when qualifying begins on 6 July.
