Ex-international rugby star makes American football look easy in 49ers debut

120 yards against the Houston Texans for Jarryd Hayne.

THE SAN FRANCISCO 49ers may have found a secret weapon this pre-season in the form of former Australian rugby league player Jarryd Hayne.

In Saturday’s pre-season opener against the Houston Texans, Hayne, who won player of the year honours in the NRL in 2014, was easily the star of the 49ers’ offence and special teams, peeling off a 53-yard run, along with an 11-yard and 13-yard punt return.

Hayne’s 53-yard burst came in the opening drive of the second quarter as the 49ers would go on to score a touchdown through Garrett Celek. While San Francisco would go on to lose 15-10 in Houston, Hayne’s performance was a significant highlight for the 49ers.

The Australian media covering Hayne couldn’t help but cheer for the 27-year-old, much to the chagrin of the Texans’ public relations staff.

Houston Chronicle sports reporter Aaron Wilson tweeted: “Australian media covering this game were cheering in the press box. Texans issued reminder of ban on cheering in the press box.”

Hayne signed a three-year contract with the 49ers in March and has impressed coaches this pre-season.
