JAVIER BALLESTEROS, THE son of legendary golfer Seve, has followed in his late father’s footsteps by turning professional.

The 24-year-old Spaniard competed at this year’s British Amateur Championship at Royal Portrush but struggled to make an impact.

He has also featured on the Challenge Tour and just missed the cut in the Dubai Desert Classic in January, as well as the Madrid Open.

“I have taken the decision of turning professional,” Javier Ballesteros said. “This is something I have always wanted.

“Whether I will succeed or not, time will tell, but I do not want to regret not having tried my best and must give it a go.

“I know it will not be easy and I am aware of the hard work required, but I must try.

“My father had a long and difficult start in golf; mine is a bit easier, although I have a disadvantage in that sense – everyone will always compare us and will expect a lot from me.”

Javier Ballesteros will start out by trying to qualify for the third-tier Alps Tour.

His father Seve died of brain cancer at the age of 54 in 2011, having won The Open three times and the Masters twice, as well as playing in eight Ryder Cups.

“Today, my dad comes especially to my mind,” Javier Ballesteros said. “He taught me everything or almost everything I know about golf, and I would have loved him see me turning pro. I am sure he would be very proud and happy.”
