IRELAND’S JENNY EGAN sensationally claimed her second canoe sprint World Cup gold yesterday by defending the K1 5,000 metres crown she won last year.

The 30-year-old battled hard to see off competition from Spain’s Estefania Fernandez and Lizzie Broughton of Great Britain, who finished in second and third respectively.

Egan, who missed out on qualification for London and then Rio by the narrowest of margins, also finished ninth in the Olympic standard A final of the K1 200 metres while also just falling short of qualifying for the K1 500 final.

“What a day, ninth in the ‘A’ final Olympic Distance K1 200m and gold in the K1 5000m,” she tweeted after his success in Portugal.
