JOHN EGAN SWAPPED Gillingham for Championship side Brentford in the summer and although there was a defeat to Huddersfield on his competitive debut, his first appearance at home couldn’t have gone any better.

The 23-year-old Corkman, the son of former Kerry footballer John, grabbed a brace as his new employers racked up a 2-0 victory over Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich.

Both goals came after the break – the first was a header, the second a left-foot strike.

It was Brentford’s first home win over Ipswich since 1955.

Elsewhere, there was plenty of other Irish players who made their mark.

Matt Doherty and Joe Mason were both on target for Wolves in their 2-0 win over Reading.

In League 1, Jay O’Shea scored for Chesterfield in their 3-1 victory at home to Swindon while Liam McAlinden found the net for League 2 side Exeter as they went down 2-1 to Hartlepool.
