As it happened: Limerick v Galway, All-Ireland SHC semi-final

The big game at Croke Park threw-in at 4pm.

After Waterford’s sensational victory over Kilkenny yesterday sealed their place in the All-Ireland final, heavyweights Limerick and Galway will battle it out this afternoon to join them.

Here’s how the sides are named to start:

There’s one late change in the Galway team, Sean Loftus replaces Fintan Burke.

1 min – Joe Canning puts over a stunning sideline to open Galway’s account.

2 mins – Concannon wins a free for a late tackle and Canning taps it over. Galway are playing with five forwards and David Burke as sweeper.

4 mins – Aaron Gillane misses his first free of the day. Limerick’s spare defender is Barry Nash.

5 mins – Darragh O’Donovan nails David Burke and a free is awarded. Canning does the rest.

9 mins – Tom Morrissey opens the Limerick scoring after nine minutes with a nice score over the shoulder.

10 mins – Brian Concannon provides a pass for Whelan who slots over a glorious effort from a tight angle. Morrissey doubles his account in response. Shane Cooney receives a yellow for a challenge on the Limerick forward.

11 mins – Whelan again, this time from the far flank. This is a good start from Galway.

12 mins – Canning drops over a point from a placed ball inside his own 65.

15 mins – Concannon splits the posts from distance. Seamus Flanagan slots one over after a probing run by Cian Lynch.

16 mins – Gearoid Hegarty intercepts Eanna Murphy’s puck-out and pulls back a score. Murphy’s restarts haven’t been up to scratch so far, but overall Galway have been impressive.  

We’re at the first-half water break.

17 mins – Concannon is looking dangerous and he turns Sean Finn before firing over. Finn picks up a yellow for his challenge on the Galway forward. Meanwhile, Conor Whelan has moved to 11 with Canning gone inside to 14.

18 mins – Gillane sends a free straight over the black spot. The Limerick half-forward line have started to enjoy themselves out there.

21 mins – Hegarty reduces the gap to two. Limerick are starting to motor now.

21 mins – Limerick switch the ball to Diarmaid Byrnes and he brings them back to within a point. 

Cathal Mannion has gone down with a hamstring injury and it doesn’t look good.

25 mins – Morrissey has another point and that’s 0-5 between himself and Hegarty. Byrnes sends Limerick ahead after another poor Murphy puck-out. 

Mannion has been replaced by Adrian Tuohy, meanwhile.

27 mins – Concannon’s third brings Galway back on level terms. 

Galway have dropped the sweeper since the water break.

28 mins – Canning’s latest free sends the Tribesmen ahead but almost immediately Aaron Gillane scores a lovely point under close attention from Daithi Burke.

29 mins – Gillane puts Limerick back in front after Kyle Hayes won a free following a great run forward. Then Hegarty continues his excellent form with another score to stretch the Treaty lead to two.

Cathal Mannion was in All-Star form having scored 1-3 against Tipperary the last day out. Galway are really feeling his absence.

31 mins – Canning drops over his second sideline of the day.

Canning is down now after shipping a heavy slap on the back from Hegarty.

SAVE! Eanna Murphy makes a good save from Flanagan, but the referee pulls it back for  a free.

36 mins – Gillane taps over his fourth free of the day.

36 mins – Declan Hannon with a moment of class from distance after a free-flowing Limerick move from the back. Conor Cooney has a shot but sends it wide.

37 mins – Tuohy pulls back a much-needed score for Galway.

39 mins – Canning’s third sideline cut of the half flies between the posts.

Limerick are in the ascendancy at the interval after a strong second quarter. Expect a change or two by Shane O’Neill. Limerick’s half-forwards are running riot out there.

Fintan Burke replaces David Burke for Galway.

36 mins – Joseph Cooney has switched to wing-forward and he scores Galway’s first score of the half.

37 mins – Hayes drives forward and wins a free for Gillane to convert.

41 mins – Flanagan sends over a nice score, he’s been playing well in his first start of the championship. Canning lands his fourth sideline from four attempts, which is remarkable. 

Goal chance for Flanagan but it’s a tame attempt. Murphy easily saves that and Hayes’s rebound.

45 mins – Jason Flynn has replaced Conor Cooney on the Galway side. Gillane slots over his sixth point from a free.

47 mins – Canning’s ninth point arrives from a free.

47 mins – Lynch flicks up to Peter Casey for a nice score.

49 mins – It’s a four point game now after Cian Lynch strides forward for his first point.

51 mins – Casey’s point is awarded by Hawk-Eye. 

We’re at the second-half water break. Limerick hold a five point advantage.

Sean Linnane comes in for Shane Cooney on the Galway side. They still persist with the sweeper despite the forward line living off scraps.

52 mins – Whelan scores a great individual effort for Galway. At the far end Lynch puts over his second as Limerick prob for a goal.

54 mins – Galway are hanging in there as Canning slots over a free.

56 mins – Galway drive at Limerick and draw a free for Canning’s ninth of the day.

Canning is down after taking a heavy hit to the head in an accidental collision with Joseph Cooney. Worrying for Galway.

Aidan Breen replaces Seamus Flanagan for Limerick.

Looks like Canning is going to be stretchered off with Evan Niland warming up for Galway.

It’s been a strange game but Galway are still in it, despite the significant losses of Cathal Mannion and Joe Canning. They’ve struggled for scores from play in the second period, thoguh.

The play is back underway following a lengthy stoppage. We’ll have at least seven or eight minutes of stoppage-time.

70 mins – Niland sends over a free from way inside his opening half with his first touch. Moments player Whelan levels the game. Galway have responded really well to Canning’s departure.

Limerick 0-23 Galway 0-22

72 mins – Byrnes puts Limerick back ahead with a free from the half-back line. Whelan shoots a wide at the far end.

We’ll have nine minutes of added time here. Six and a half to go.

75 mins – Niland slots over a brilliant effort to level the game for the fifth time. Morrissey sends Limerick back ahead immediately.

75 mins – Limerick move two ahead now after Breen’s effort.

77 mins – Fintan Burke curls over Galway’s fifth sideline cut of the day.
