Brighton 1-0 Newcastle United

Welcome to the final game of the day, where Gus Poyet’s Brighton will be hoping to unnerve Alan pardew’s Newcastle.

It’s an interesting tie this given the proactive management of Poyet. Also, with the way the FA Cup has opened out this season – with both Manchester clubs exiting – Newcastle can harbour realistic aspirations of finally lifting a trophy.

The teams:

Brighton: Brezovan, Greer, Dunk, El-Abd, Barnes, Sparrow Mackail-Smith, Calderon, Bridcutt, Buckley, Forster-Caskey.

Newcastle: Krul, Santon, Cabaye, Simpson, Williamson, Guthrie Ben Arfa, Perch, Gutierrez, Best, Shola Ameobi

And we’re off.

Jon Champion just said: “We could have a Newcastle-Sunderland final this year.” Neither team are in the fifth round draw yet.

Yoann Cabaye is on the ground and injured after a robust challenge. He did pick up a bit of a knock against QPR recently.

Newcastle quite cautious at the moment. Ameobi isolated up front. You would think they’d take the game to Brighton a bit more.

But, despite of that, Ireland’s Leon Best almost gives Newcastlethe lead! He controls a high ball then swivels superbly to shoot just wide.

It’s a reflection of Giovanni Trapattoni’s wealth of options up front that Leon Best is highly unlikely to be on the plane to Poland. He’s a useful option but, for Ireland, the sixth-choice striker.

It’s quite a slow game at the minute. Both sides quite reserved. Will Buckley escapes down the right to almost fashion an opportunity for Brighton but Newcastle clear.

Brighton threaten again. They’ve been marginally the better team here.

Danny Simpson almost opens the scoring for Newcastle, breaking through on the right but his shot is well blocked and the ball is eventually cleared. Doesn’t score many, Simpson.

Craig Mackail-Smith latches onto a loose Newcastle ball to run directly at goal but his shot is deflected away. Corner to Brighton…

… but it’s headed over the bar. The pity about this so far is that there have been flashes of quality and you feel both teams have so much more to offer. It’s been reserved so far.

Half-time. 0-0. More action in the second half please.

Second half just about to get under way. Let;s hope the two managers have fired a rocket up both teams. Although you’d have to imagine both were relatively content with two comfortable first halves.

We’re off.

Newcastle beginning to turn the screw. Best was put through there only for Brezovan to turn it away with his feet. Danny Guthrie then has a go from distance but can’t reepat last week’s wonderstrike.

Ben Arfa on another dazzling run. Only glimpses today but when he’s at his best he really is a joy to watch.

An hour gone, and Newcastle have asserted control. Still just picking at the edges though.

Oh, a bit of controversy. Cabaye swung a leg in the direction of Adam El-Abd’s face as both went to ground. The number-six is bleeding. Hard to tell if Cabaye did it deliberately.

Brighton seem energised by that moment of anger and are pushing Newcastle back. Again, chances still at a premium.

Buckley was about to volley one for Brighton there only for Guthrie to nick it off his toe.

On replay, hard not to think Cabaye did that intentionally. The force and direction of his foot as well as the expression on his face. Arguably should be gone for it.

GOAL! Brighton 1-0 Newcastle United

Will Buckley produces something from nothing. Weaving his way down the left, he eventually makes his way into the box and unleashes. The shot is probably going well wide but it deflects off Danny Williamson and past Tim Krul. Thirteen minutes for Newcastle to respond.

Pardew makes a triple substitution. Ben Arfa, Santon and Guthrie all off for Gosling, Ryan Taylor and Ferguson.

Will Buckley named man of the match. In truth, he’s the only player who produced something of note… so far. Three minutes of normal time left.

Four minutes added time announced, to widespread boos from the Brighton fans.

Newcastle can’t get the ball out of their own half or off Brighton. The Championship side doing a superb job of containing them.

That’s it! Another upset as Brighton eliminate Premier League Newcastle. It was by no means a riproaring game but that ultimately suited Brighton. Will Buckley produced a goal out of nothing and it proved enough. Poyet’s team reach the last 16 for the second year running.
