AS IT HAPPENED

As it happened: Wales v Fiji

Wales are through to the World Cup quarter-finals after obliterating Fiji. Ireland will be next for Warren Gatland’s men if Brian O’Driscoll and co. beat Italy…

Full-Time: Wales 66-0 Fiji

Is it just us or does it feel like the dead of winter? No? Anyway, enough chit chat. We’re at the business end of Pool D and there are teams to bring you…

Fiji: Keresoni; Vulivuli, Fatiaki, Lovobalavu, Tagicakibau; Little, Buatava; Nailago, Koto Vuli, Somoca; Nakarawa, Lewaravu; Nasiga, Matadigo, Talei.

Wales: Byrne; North, Williams, Roberts, Halfpenny; Priestland, Phillips; Jenkins, Bennett, Jones; Davies, Charteris; Jones, Warburton, Faletau.

The game is three minutes old and there’s a penalty to Wales for an early tackle…

Jamie Roberts try! Fiji are terrible from the line out and their tackling isn’t much better, as Roberts dummies before tearing through. Priestland converts.

Interesting stat…

Fiji have responded well and they’re camped near the Wales 22. Warren Gatland’s team is holding firm though.

Nicky Little’s first kick of the day goes wide. A weak penalty by the Fijian fly-half.

A break in play and Travis are playing over the PA. No need for that.

Beautiful hands from Wales as Rhys Priestland starts the move that sees Jamie Roberts let Scott Williams in. The big centre just manages to stay in play before going over. That’s his fourth of the tournament. Priestland converts.

Priestland scores his first penalty of the game..

Looking like Ireland v Wales next weekend in the quarter-final, assuming Declan Kidney’s men beat the Italians… Tough one to call..

Penalty against Sam Warburton, who doesn’t release the ball. Better from Fiji.

Nothing came of that and the Southern Hemisphere side still have to register a point. The Fijians are matching Wales in many departments but they’re not clinical enough.

Nicely done by Wales! Jamie Roberts is heavily involved again as George North races clear for Wales’ third try. The ball was clearly knocked forward but nobody spotted it. Priestland converts.

George North carves up the middle before offloading to Wales’ young skipper Warburton, turning into one of the players of the tournament. Another try.

It’s half-time and Wales lead 31-0. That last try saw Gatland’s men grab the bonus point they needed to ensure their passage to the next round. Time for a coffee here, the match is a procession and the temptation to catch 40 winks is looming large…

Fiji have nothing to lose and Nicky Little gives his players a good chance to get after the ball. Charteris takes it though..

Warburton plays in Phillips just five metres from the line. He’s tackled by two Fijians and Wales have a penalty.

Fiji are not getting the breaks – several Welsh transgressions have not been spotted by the officials.

George North has been phenomenal. The big man moves gracefully along the surface, one-twos with Priestland before seeing Roberts in. Too easy.

Three England players – James Haskell, Dylan Hartley and Chris Ashton – have been reprimanded for comments made to a female hotel worker…

Fatiaki has a good chance and Fiji are not giving up. That being said, he can’t get through the Wales defence.

Wales get their sixth try of the game, and this time it’s Lloyd Burns who shows great upper body strength to drive over.

Stephen Jones with the conversion.

For those interested in the England story. No dwarves this time, it seems…

Fiji make it up as far as the Wales tryline but they turn the ball over and Stephen Jones clears.

A shambles of a try as Vulivuli spills a kick by Gethin Jenkins and Leigh Halfpenny races through to score.

Fiji are caught offside and it’s a penalty to Wales. Meanwhile, North is named as man of the match..

Lloyd Williams does some great work to get his name on the scoreboard, using the decoys on the outside to scythe through the Fiji defence. Another try. Jones converts.

Fatiaki fumbles as Fiji press. It has not been their day. Wales’ hopes of a clean sheet remain intact.

It’s been Wales from start to finish and they advance to the World Cup quarter-finals in some style. Fiji can get nowhere near Jonathan Davies and Stephen Jones makes it ten successful kicks from ten. It finishes 66-0. Will it be Ireland next for Wales?
