Look out, Mignolet! Liverpool sign Karius - and hand him the number one shirt

German keeper, 22, completes €6m move from Mainz.

SIMON MIGNOLET FACES a fight for his Liverpool place following the signing of promising German keeper Loris Karius.

Karius, who has represented Germany up to U21 level, joins the Reds from FSV Mainz 05 on a “long-term contract.”

The 22-year-old flew to Merseyside today where he completed a medical and finalised the transfer, which is thought to be worth €6 million.

And he revealed that manager Jurgen Klopp’s plans convinced him to make the move to Anfield.

“I spoke to the manager and I had a good feeling afterwards because he told me what he wants to do with the club and with the players,” he said.

“It was a good talk with him and after that I was convinced this was the right decision.”

Karius, who spent time on Manchester City’s books as a youth before returning to his native Germany, made 34 Bundesliga appearances for Mainz last season, keeping nine clean sheets.

Liverpool confirmed that he will take over the number one jersey, which was last worn by Brad Jones in the 2014/15 season.

Klopp said: “I am really pleased that we were able to move so quickly to get him and that Loris has shown such a desire to come to Liverpool with a lot of other clubs interested in him. ”
