Clermont prop cited after alleged gouging incident involving Ulster's Luke Marshall

The Frenchman faces a hefty ban if found guilty.

CLERMONT PROP ETIENNE Falgoux has been cited for allegedly making contact with the eye area of Ulster’s Luke Marshall during the Champions Cup clash between the teams on Sunday.

The 23-year-old French forward now faces a disciplinary hearing in London tomorrow after the incident during the first half of the game at the Stade Marcel-Michelin.

Marshall was first in to make the tackle on second row Arthuer Iturria but is then seen holding his face as play develops on the opposite side of the pitch.

In a statement released this evening, EPCR say the complaint was made by match citing commissioner, Jeff Mark.

If found guilty, Falgoux faces a hefty punishment with World Rugby’s sanctions for the contravention of Law 10.4 (m) carrying a ban of between 12 to 208 weeks.

“EPCR has received a citing complaint against the ASM Clermont Auvergne prop, Etienne Falgoux (No 1), following his club’s European Rugby Champions Cup, Round 4 match against Ulster Rugby at Stade Marcel-Michelin on Sunday, 18 December 2016,” it read.

“Falgoux is alleged to have made contact with the eye area of the Ulster Rugby centre, Luke Marshall (No 13), in the 31st minute of the match in contravention of Law 10.4 (m). The complaint was made by the match Citing Commissioner, Jeff Mark (Wales).

“Jeremy Summers (England), Chairman, Jean-Philippe Lachaume (France) and Becky Essex (England) have been appointed as the independent Disciplinary Committee for the hearing which will take place in London tomorrow (Wednesday, 21 December).”

Twelve months ago, Marshall was the victim of another gouging with England’s Chris Ashton receiving a 10-week suspension for the offence.
