Irish boxer Lynn Harvey suffers first pro bout defeat

There was disappointment for the Dubliner last night.

IRISH FLYWEIGHT BOXER Lynn Harvey suffered her first career defeat as a professional fighter last night, via judge’s decision at the Inception fight night.

Spanish opponent Mary Romero scored a 60-55 victory over Harvey, who was fighting competitively for the first time since making her pro debut last year.

There could be little argument with the scorecards in the end, but Harvey was relentless throughout the six rounds.

Romero impressed in the opening round, landing a series of sharp hooks and jabs in the early seconds but Harvey recovered with some counter-punches before the two minutes had lapsed.

The Dublin boxer responded well in the second round and hit Romero with a head shot but the Spaniard settled soon after and concluded the round with a devastating punch just before the bell.

Harvey looked to be shaken by the punishment but refused to surrender and enjoyed the better start of the third round with a few jabs and hooks to steady herself. Romero however, continued to find answers to Harvey’s attacks and appeared to have the advantage heading into the fourth round.

Harvey finally found her rhythm in the fifth round and looked to be on the cusp of unlocking her opponent with some strong fist work from the ropes along with a few smooth combinations.

Regardless of the impact of Romero’s strikes, Harvey still had the energy and the composure to stay in the battle and that gifted her some momentum ahead of the final round.

A swift jab landed on Romero’s neck shortly after the restart and Harvey added another succession of hits to the face as a chorus of chants erupted behind her. She even drew blood from just under Romero’s left eye to add to her chances of stealing a victory in what commentators noted was the fight of the night so far.

Romero’s experience and class, however, was apparent throughout, and her victory was duly earned.
