LIMERICK goalkeeper Nickie Quaid has emerged as a major injury doubt ahead of the Munster senior hurling championship quarter-final against Clare on May 24.

The Limerick Leader reports that Quaid suffered a collarbone injury during training last Friday night and required a hospital stay.

Former Allstar nominee Quaid, 25, has been a model of consistency since 2011 but his unbroken run of successive championship games since then is now under threat.

Quaid, son of the late Tommy and cousin of Joe, made his senior championship debut outfield in 2010 under Justin McCarthy but has made the goalkeeping position his own in recent seasons.

If Quaid fails to regain fitness in time for the massive clash with the Banner County, Limerick manager TJ Ryan will choose between Aaron Murphy and Barry Hennessy for the pivotal spot between the sticks.

Murphy has featured for Limerick during the Allianz Hurling League over the last two years but Hennessy hasn’t played yet.

Limerick are also monitoring the fitness of captain Donal O’Grady, who damaged his ankle during the League quarter-final defeat to Dublin at Croke Park.

It has been confirmed that Limerick will play neighbours Galway in a challenge game on Saturday evening at the Na Piarsaigh GAA grounds in Caherdavin. The game will have a 7pm start.
