AS IT HAPPENED

As it happened: Manchester United v PSV, Uefa Champions League

We had all the action from Old Trafford as United looked to secure qualification to the knockout stages.

Hello and welcome to tonight’s coverage of Manchester United’s Champions League clash with PSV.

Let’s dive straight into it with team news. Here’s the United line-up:

Man United: De Gea, Darmian, Smalling, Rojo, Blind, Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin, Lingard, Rooney, Memphis, Martial.

Subs: Romero, McNair, Young, Fellaini, Mata, Pereira, Wilson.

PSV: Zoet, Arias, Bruma, Moreno, Brenet, Hendrix, Guardado, Propper, Narsingh, De Jong, Locadia.

Subs: Pasveer, Isimat, Pereiro, Schaars, Maher, Poulsen, Bergwijn.

A win for Manchester United will send them back to to the top of the group after Wolfsburg leapfrogged the Old Trafford outfit thanks to their 2-0 win over CSKA Moscow earlier this evening.

Here’s the group as it stands. Three points will also send United into the knockout stages:

We’re almost ready for kick-off. Which way do you see tonight’s game going?

Poll Results:

Manchester United (141)
Draw (134)
PSV (22)

And PSV get the game under way.

United win the game’s first corner after Martial’s cross is cleared by Bruma.

The visitors deal with the game’s first corner comfortably enough and United are forced to build again from the back. The camera pans to Phillip Cocu who still looks the exact same as he did when he was playing.

Schweinsteiger has the first shot on target but it’s a tame effort that Zoet deals with comfortably.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy was in attendance earlier on as Manchester United’s U19 team took on PSV earlier and he’s made his way to Old Trafford too.

Ten minutes in and there’s not a huge amount to report from Old Trafford.

United are certainly dominating possession but just have the one corner and one shot on target to show for it, neither of which were particularly threatening.

PSV’S first decent attack is dealt with in an unorthodox manner by Lingard who heads clear when it was surely easier to stick his foot to it.

The United fans paid a special tribute to George Best on the 10th anniversary of his death in the 7th minute.

United win another corner as PSV are down to ten-men with Narsingh currently receiving treatment off the field — and he’ll have to be replaced it seems.

The corner comes to nothing, as does Memphis Depay’s speculative effort after it.

Substitution – Narsingh will have to go off and Gaston Pereiro is on

Chance - Great movement from United but Rooney can’t connect on the cross.

From the follow up, a spectacular effort at an overhead kick from Lingard sees the young United attacker connect only with fresh air.

CLOSE! – United really should be ahead, great ball by Rooney to Lingard but he can’t control the ball when a shot looked certain and Zoet looks relived to gather up the football.

Much better from the home side in the last few minutes. They’re finding pockets of space — particularly down the right — and a goal could be coming.

And just as United looked like they were getting on top, PSV have their best period of sustained possession.

CLOSE! – A good ball in from Rojo is dealt with well by Brenet but he hands United a corner.

The ball in from Blind is perfect and it looks like Schneiderlin has given the home side the lead but a touch from the defender and Zoet gathers on the line.

CLOSE! - Hendrix turns at the edge of the area and his curling shot forces a fine save out of David de Gea who has been nothing more than an interested spectator so far.

CLOSE! – Martial’s effort from 7 yards after a decent build up from Manchester United really should have resulted in the game’s opening goal. However, the young French striker elects to big toe it rather than a side-foot effort and Zoet makes the close-range save.

Chance – Decent from United again but Martial’s effort is saved at the near post

Half-time – Manchester United 0-0 PSV

And that’s the end of the first half. United have certainly looked the better of the two teams and really should be ahead but it wouldn’t be a massive shock if PSV were to take all three points here either.

Wayne Rooney gets the second half under-way for Manchester United.

Chance – Another Blind corner and Schneiderlin has a free header but it goes well over the bar.

CLOSE! – That’s the closest we’ve come to the opening goal. Martial’s cross in is met by Lingard whose glancing header goes just wide.

A bright start to the second half from the home side but without the end product so far.

It would be Ruud not to, etc

Substitution - Schweinsteiger and Memphis are off.. Fellaini and Ashley Young are coming on.

Substitution – And Hendrix goes off for PSV to be replaced by Nicolas Isimat-Mirin

It’s that kind of atmosphere in Old Trafford:

Cocu probably the happier of the two manager at this stage:

This… this has not been great in the second half at all. PSV look more than happy to share the spoils and United don’t look to have any idea as to how to break the visitors down.

CLOSE! Jesse Lingard blazes over when it looked easier to score. Another poor effort.

11 minutes left, can anyone find a winner?

Yellow - De Jong picks up the first booking of the night as he drags down Jesse Lingard as the United youngster attempts to launch a counter-attack. Smart play from the PSV player.

Substitution – Mata comes on to replace Darmian as LVG has his final roll of the dice.

It’s close…

We’re in the second minute of injury time and you’d think the home side were winning 1-0 the way they’re playing.

Full-time – Manchester United 0-0 PSV

That was pretty poor from the home team and, with tonight’s other result, they have to go to Wolfsburg to win if they’re don’t want to end up in the Europa League.

That’s it from us. sorry the game wasn’t better but them’s the breaks. Thanks as always for joining us.
