WIGAN MANAGER ROBERTO MARTINEZ will hold further talks with Liverpool about the vacant role at the Merseyside club on Tuesday, according to Latics owner Dave Whelan.

Whelan has also said he wants to know the Spaniard’s plans by this Thursday, having originally stated that Martinez had until June 5 to make up his mind.

“Roberto has told me he is speaking with Liverpool again on Tuesday,” Whelan told ESPN.

“I have now made it clear that I want this sorted out by Thursday at the latest as we have to get on preparing for next season.”

One sticking point for Martinez regards Liverpool’s preference to have their manager working under a sporting director, such as Louis van Gaal.

The 38-year-old is not keen to have his decisions regarding football questioned from above.

Liverpool owner John W Henry is set to travel to England with the club’s chairman Tom Werner to finalise the selection process once and for all.

It had been reported that they were trying to convince Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers to be part of the interview process, the Northern Irishman having initially turned down the chance, but the Welsh club insisted on Monday that he has no interest in the job.

“We would like to clarify the speculation in the press surrounding our manager Brendan Rodgers,” a statement said.

“We would like to confirm that there has been no contact from Liverpool and nothing has changed since our previous statement on the issue.”
