Off the record: 5 sports stories you may have missed this weekend

Rajai Davis with one of the catches of the year, a BMX pile-up and Chelsea’s new signing does his best David Dunne impression.

UNLESS YOU’VE BEEN glued to the internet all weekend, there’s a chance that some weird and wonderful sporting tidbits might have slipped through the cracks. Here’s a run-down of some of our favourites…

#HE FELL OVA’ Chelsea shelled out €40m for Belgium’s most highly-rated player during the summer and while the former Lille attacker is likely to be a huge success in the Premier League, he was left looking a little red-faced yesterday after he spectacularly failed an attempted trick in the Community Shield yesterday.

It is reminiscent of David Dunne’s hilarious fall from few years back.

#PILE UP We won’t pretend that we were big BMX fans going into the London Olympics but by the end of it, we were hooked. And this is why. Eight riders go into the first turn… and one (New Zealand’s Marc Willers) comes out on two wheels.

#RIP Tributes have been pouring in for Sid Waddell since news emerged yesterday that the legendary darts commentator passed away at the age of 72.

“This lad has got more checkouts than Tescos”. Brilliant.

#WHAT A CATCH At 5ft 9in, Toronto’s Rajai Davis makes light work of the 10ft wall at the Rogers Centre to snatch what looked like being a home run from Casey McGehee of the New York Yankees.

#IBRA After the club’s owners spared no expense to bring in AC Milan pair Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva as well as Brazilian starlet Lucas Moura from Sao Paolo, many football fans are looking forward to seeing if Paris Saint-Germain can mix it with the big boys in Europe this season.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side got their French league campaign off to an indifferent start over the weekend, however, with their new Swedish striker bailing them out with a brace at home to Lorient.
