Off the record: 5 sporting stories you may have missed this weekend

Mass brawls, spectacular crashes and Frank Maloney’s lack of tact. It’s all here…

UNLESS YOU’VE BEEN glued to the internet all weekend, there’s a chance that some weird and wonderful sporting tidbits might have slipped through the cracks. Here’s a run-down of some of the stories you may have missed.

1. #MASS BRAWL There was pandemonium at the NASCAR Sprint Cup at Phoenix International Raceway. The race ended early after Jeff Gordon sent Clint Bowyer into the wall, with Joey Lagano also taken out of the reckoning.

This did not go down at all well as a huge fight erupted between rival pit crews in the garage area.

2. #DON’T LOOK DOWN This is not one for the queasy of stomach, but check out rider Brendan Fairclough taking on this absolutely mental course in the Mexican city of Taxco.

It’s filmed from the helmet cam of a pursuing cyclist.

3. #IMPROBABLE VICTORY Charlie Beljan took victory in the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic in Florida on Sunday, his first on the PGA Tour.

The rookie’s win seemed like a complete impossibility after his second round on Friday, though, as he suffered a panic attack, had to be taken out of the scoring room on a stretcher and was forced to spend the night in hospital.

Beljan returned to Disney on Saturday morning fearful of another panic attack, and had to fight through one at the turn. Then, somehow, he pulled away by making five birdies in a six-hole stretch on the Magnolia Course.

4. #OUCH Thankfully, Jorge Lorenzo was unhurt after this spectacular crash at the final MotoGP race of the season in Valencia.

5. #BELOW THE BELT Frank Maloney is a big talker at the best of times, but he overstepped the mark during the fight between Wladimir Klitschko and Mariusz Wach at the weekend.

The boxing promoter said after Klitschko’s victory that the fighter would be happy at not having to pay his late trainer and friend Emanuel Steward his 10% share of the purse, with Twitter immediately up in arms at the tasteless remarks.

Steward died on October 25th at the age of 68.
